visualParagon is my online presence. Right now, the only thing here is my personal blog... but soon, I will have my site design finished and you will be able to look through my portfolio, read articles, and defy the laws of physics (ok, that last one was a stretch.)

Hospital Visit

Tammy and I took a little trip to the ER yesterday morning around 5:45 am. Her stomach has been hurting her for the past month, on and off at night. At first we thought it was just gas, but it finally got so bad yesterday that I forced her into the car and drove her to the hospital (she didn’t want to go at all). Once there, the doctor told us that her gall bladder has got to come out, so… please pray for Tammy. She will be having her operation sometime within the next few weeks and is not exactly looking forward to it.

Prevent Drupal from caching your module's output

Well, it's been an incredibly long time since I've written anything, so here's a little something to get started again.

I wrote a in-house Drupal module for one-use ticket file streaming. Basically, a unique identifier is used to stream the file, then is discarded, making the url invalid after one use. Everything worked fine for logged-in users, but just today I noticed a giant hole: users who are not logged in can access the file as much as they want, thanks to Drupal's caching system.

Updates

I promise, updates are coming at some point in time. I’ve been pretty busy, and my primary goal right now is to come up with a design that I actually like for this site. It’s not going well… I’m in a big design rut right now. Not cool.

Background - Spash

I designed a new background this weekend. This time, it’s wide, to accommodate the beautiful display on my new work macbook. Hope you like!

Escape from Reality

My wife and I are sitting here watching tv (Thursday nights on NBC). All of the best shows are on, like 30 Rock and The Office. There’s also two completely different medical shows, Scrubs and ER. Scrubs is pretty funny, and ER really keeps you riveted, but both shows are driving me bonkers tonight. Scrubs featured a woman who has decided to kill herself because she doesn’t want to suffer through her terminal disease, and ER featured a woman with a DNR, who is awake but on a ventilator, also wanting to end it rather than deal with her injuries.

And the Week Rolls On

Well, this week has been pretty crazy, and it’s only Wednesday night!

Traffic School

well, it’s now 8:39am and I’m sitting in a classroom with several other people waiting for our traffic school instructor. Apparently, the “8:30 sharp or don’t bother coming” policy doesn’t extend to the teachers. Go figure, why should the government follow its own rules. I can’t do much now but wait…

Bio Module Contrib

A while ago I submitted a patch for the Drupal bio module that added the option to force users to create a bio when they first log in. That patch is still in development, but it’s now getting merged in with a new patch by Webchick that is adding some really great functionality. Basically, the new patch will let you define fields that you want to appear on the user registration page.

Christmas Tunes

I love listening to internet radio. Nashville has plenty of broadcast radio stations, but most of them are country (which I hate with a passion), and they are all way too commercial. Usually, when I listen to the radio, I just listen NPR. But during work, I like to have a little music playing. Come Christmas time (now earlier than Thanksgiving thanks to retail America), I have to get my Christmas music fix.

Metro Nashville Government Woes

Wow, I’m not entirely sure where to start. I think government in general is a good idea, but Metro Nashville must have drawn the short straw when it came to good governance.

Several weeks ago, I received a citation for going 51 mph in a 35 mph zone. Fine, I admit that I was speeding. But, to allay any fear that I am a crazed road demon bent on life-threatening speed orgasms, let me explain:
